Combat Arms Training and Maintenance (CATM) CDC Practice Exam - Prep & Practice Test

The Mossberg 12-gauge model 590 shotgun is designed primarily for military and law enforcement use, emphasizing reliability and versatility in a variety of environments. The correct choke type for this shotgun is the cylinder choke. A cylinder choke allows for the widest spread of shot, which is advantageous in close-range engagements where accuracy is less of a concern, and the shooter may need to hit a target quickly.

This characteristic makes it particularly suitable for home defense, crowd control, and situations where rapid follow-up shots are necessary. The lack of constriction means that the shot pattern spreads out more quickly, which can enhance the effectiveness of the shotgun in close quarters.

While other choke types like full, improved cylinder, and modified provide varying degrees of shot constriction and pattern tightening, they are generally used for different shooting scenarios, such as hunting or sport shooting at longer distances where precision is more critical. In the context of the Mossberg 590’s intended use, the cylinder choke aligns best with its design philosophy and operational goals.
